SIPATSI is a handbag called gipatsi (singular) or sipatsi (plural) in Gitonga. The basketry and its geometry were created by the Vatonga, the ethnic group that Marcia’s family is part of. The people of Tonga origin predominantly inhabit the region around Inhambane Bay in Mozambique.
Research carried out by the Pedagogic Universities of Mozambique and reflected in the books of Paul Gerdes, illustrate the vibrant cultural mosaic of the people of sub-Saharan Africa and their crafts. Inspired by this research, Marcia has studied and created amazing pieces using these techniques.
Among people in the sub-Saharan regions, creating and exploring shapes and forms manifests intensely through diverse artistic cultures and social contexts. Marcia works to integrate this aesthetic richness into her unique products.
