DESIGN FOR CHANGE

Drawing on years of on-site rural coordination and community interaction through the organic craft sector, Marcia Nangy developed a systematic approach to rural program implementation that has a proven track-record of success.

Under her guidance, Dathonga Consulting was established as a way to positively impact the human condition in rural Africa. Dathonga has used this approach to assist organisations such as the WWF –  World Wildlife Fund, the UNDP, INGC – Mozambique’s National Environmental Disaster Response Agency, DANIDA – Danish Cooperation, and now with the KHETHU Association in partnership with Makobo platform for people displaced by war in Cabo Delgado.

The company specialises in rural development projects with expertise in the craft sectors. We’re proud in using an entrepreneurial approach to rural livelihood diversification by implementing innovative solutions to problems that are common in remote communities. We know how to get things done in regions where no one goes.

Coordinating a project in a rural environment requires skilled and dependable staff on the ground. Whilst assisting our clients to optimise the value potential of their local natural resources, we also encourage them to see the land and the people using it with a new perspective.

Dathonga Consulting takes the time to observe before acting and to learn from the community, harnessing traditional knowledge by incorporating it into successful projects.

Through arts and crafts programs, DATHONGA aims to preserve traditional Mozambican products, supporting intergenerational learning through community training programs that help youth celebrate and value artisanal techniques.

Dathonga’s work specifically supports projects that drive community development with tangible, commercializable art and craft production. We work to help develop artisan skills and empower producers to create exquisite products competitive in markets around the world.

RECENT PROJECT

DESIGN FOR SOCIAL IMPACT

Design for Social Impact is a project by Plataforma Makobo for people displaced by war in Mozambique. The project launched in the 25 de Junho refugee camp, in Metuge district, in Cabo Delgado province.rict in Cabo delgado.

It was our honour to work with the women and men at the camp, to bring back smiles and hope through producing crafts, offering dignity and income for their new life after the war.

The objective of the partnership between Plataforma Makobo, Dathonga Designs and Universidade Católica de Moçambique is  to help create sources of income for displaced people, through handcrafted production. With the help of Dathonga Designs, the program is helping them develop skills, create and produce modern products to be sold in various markets
